Our village, Monte S. Maria Tiberina, is surrounded by rivers and mountains which have remained uncontaminated thanks to their distance from the major highways. An ancient poem of the XVII Century describes it as : A Mountain which nearly borders with Heaven”. It was for many centuries an autonomous fiefdom, the origins of which began with settlements dating back to 1500 a.c., up to the early XIX Century when it became the property of the Archduchy of Tuscany. Until then it was the home of a people who had inhabited our peninsula before the arrival of the Italics. The Parish Church, dedicated to “Sancta Maria”, was built in the first half of the XI Century. Then followed the building of the Castle and the little town, owned by various Marquisates (the last of which was the Bourbon del Monte Family) whose turbulent family and historical events spanned the following centuries. Many other easily interesting places of the region are within easy reach, namely, Lippiano, Marcignano and the Tuscan Tiber Valley with places such as Monterchi, Citerna, Sansepolcro, Caprese Michelangelo, the splendid medieval town of Anghiari, and the most beautiful Arezzo. Città di Castello which is only 9 km distant hosts the thermal baths of Fontecchio, a renaissance historic centre, a Cathedral. Its musical and summer festivals include the Festival of Nations, a National Horse Show, the Truffle Festival and a Fair of Antique Books, on top of which small markets abound throughout the year. The various Art Galleries (including the Burri Art Gallery, the Museum of Popular Traditions and the Museum of Textile Crafts are also well worth visiting. Possible excursions embrace the other Art cities of Umbria and Tuscany namely Perugia, Cortona, Gubbio, Assisi, Florence and Siena. Lake Trasimeno is also nearby. For young children one can visit the Città dei Ragazzi and the Parco del Sole in Perugia, which is only 30 minutes drive by car, or the Games Park Mirabilandia just an hour’s drive away.
